FAQs

Why do people begin therapy?

Therapy is a way of learning to understand yourself better. It is a way to help you make the changes you want within yourself and your relationships so that you can feel a greater sense of fulfillment and ease.

How can therapy help me?

Therapy is a process of self-discovery that can help us learn to deal more effectively with life’s challenges and to feel more comfortable with ourselves. The result is often an improvement in health and in general well-being. People of all ages and backgrounds are able to grow and learn from therapy. There is never a "wrong" time to begin.

What type of therapy do you provide?

While there is no such thing as a “one size fits all approach” to therapy. Our therapists are trained in and primarily practice psychodynamic psychotherapy. This approach aims to help clients understand their emotions, thoughts, early life experiences, and beliefs to gain insight into their lives and their present-day problems.

How does change happen?

The relationship that forms between you and your therapist is used as a means of understanding habitual ways of behaving and relating. By exploring underlying conflicts and ways of relating that are at the root of their problems, clients gain insight and change becomes possible. Over time, clients can learn to cope with difficult feelings and develop new ways of thinking.

How long is therapy?

Therapy sessions are typically 45-50 minutes. It is helpful for clients to meet weekly with their therapist at a minimum. The length of time while in therapy depends on individual circumstances and will be determined together.

What does the first session look like?

For many people, it's scary to ask for help, and you may feel nervous in the beginning. This is perfectly natural. Your first session is a time for you and your therapist to get to know each other, review office policies, privacy and confidentiality. Keep in mind that psychotherapy is not about instant solutions, rather it is about equipping you with life-long solutions.

Do you provide medication?

We do not provide medication. If your therapist feels that you may need medication, they will provide you with a referral to a psychiatrist, a medical doctor who specializes in prescribing and managing medication. Medication is not a replacement for talk therapy.

What are your privacy policies?

A client’s right to privacy and confidentiality are protected by law and HIPPA. We will provide you with documentation of our privacy policies at your first appointment.

What is the cancellation policy?

We will do our best to reschedule whenever possible. Cancellations will be subject to a full charge if not received at least 24 hours in advance This is necessary because a time commitment is made to you and is held exclusively for you.
